Fantastic Fathers’ Day dinner

Friday night was a special Fathers’ Day dinner at Man Bo in Geelong which is a Chinese restaurant. We invited my lovely Nanna and Pa, my handsome Dad and my gorgeous Mum. It was fantastic getting together and act as a polite host.

I was astonished by the coldness of the night. When I got inside I was even more astonished. The place has rich wooden roof tiles with engraved gold dragons. The most brilliant objects were the dragon lights with swirling pattens on their bodies and huge gaping jaws which the lights came out of.

The finely dressed waiter gave us two choices: to have a menu and order straight from it, or to have a special vegetarian banquet laid out for us. We chose to have the banquet because we thought a surprise would be the most wonderful way to start the Fathers’ Day weekend theme.

We started with a divine San Choi Bao – a flaky lettuce leaf which wrapped around grated vegetables inside. To eat the San Choi Bao I wrapped the lettuce leaf in my hands and took a huge contented munch. Some of the grated vegetable fell onto the plate so I used my chopsticks to pick up the rest because it was such a delicious entree that I wanted to eat every tiny possible bit of it.

Secondly we had a spring roll, perfectly brown, even more filling than the first entree and it was absolutely luscious. The spring roll tasted even better with some spicy sauce that was laid out next to the plate.

Next was a potato and eggplant dumpling which as the saltiest dumpling I’d tasted and the most perfect lining of eggplant. The potato inside the dumpling was, mashed, plump and extremely creamy. Pa sneaked one from my plate when I wasn’t looking!

But the meal hadn’t finished!

I was amazed by the tenderness of the tofu in the next dish which had gravy, shitake mushrooms and bok choi. I’d love to have this meal go into my lunchbox everyday!

There was a vegetarian sweet and sour dish next which included tiny balls of potato which were deep fried and served with capsicum and pineapple.

I had finished the meal and was waiting to order my favourite course of the evening – dessert. Whist the adults hogged on banana fritters, I delightfully ate some deep fried ice-cream that went down quite well.

When our bellies were fully contented and we were rummaging for our bags, the waiter gave us each a packet of peppermints which I am enjoying right now and loving them!

Eating at school

Today was flabbergasting. I was eating my own lunch in the classroom, a tofu and carrot bun, when I heard Kaleb and Lachlan say ‘I LOVE TOFU’! right in front of me.

First, naturally I thought it was a joke. But when I looked at their faces this is what I saw : open mouths and eyes so wide they showed to the whites.

But still there’s other times I remember. Three weeks ago another class friend said that my lunch looked like cow poo. And she’s absolutely right. It just happens to be quite delicious cow poo.

It is the same with pea soup. I call it Witches Warts and spinach.

School lunch times are absolutely NOT hard to handle. All you have to say is ‘Yes, you are absolutely right”. If they do anything more, don’t dob, just walk away.

Here’s some things you might like to try:

Chocolate soy icecream
Aribars (if you like rice bubbles and cocoa try these)
Carman’s Muesli bits
Crunky (yummy Japanese chocolate)
Soy milky
Ginger beer
Green tea
