4 goals for promoting urban cycling – State of Design Festival talk
Mikael Colville Anderson is a cyclist, but the weird thing is that he does not call himself a cyclist. He, and other people who ride bikes just think themselves as normal people going down to the milk bar or getting some bread. He lives in Copenhagen with his wife and son Felix and is a film maker as well as a bike rider.
One of the things I learnt from Mikael is that we call bikes dangerous, expensive, sub cultural etc but it is really glamorous and effortless. You see, we need to make bikes a ‘hero brand’. You know when you go to a shop and see signs of ‘buy this an buy that’? Well that’s a hero brand.
I think Mikael is a really great person because the way he speaks is interesting and the way he lives is really amazing. It was really worth going to this talk. Bike riding is cool!

New chickens!
On the weekend we got two new chickens! They are so cute. Instead of clucking, they make little chirps! Plus, you should see them …. they are really small.
It all started when Mum came to school with a great big toothy grin. “What’s so cool?” I thought to myself. I did fencing then rushed home to find out. When I saw them they looked lovely. I made a house for them our of straw and they went in and out all the time.
But, amongst all this cuteness, I would like to thank Dad for going to pick them up and taking his time to do that.
Here’s some photos of my new chickens who are named Tofu and Edamame.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
MSO’s music is beautiful in many ways. Trees sway to the beat and puddles of water shiver when the climax begins. That’s the sound. When the emotional part happens, people suddenly feel relaxed. That is the effect.
But when the MSO play Rachmaninov the sound and effect is quite different. When the exciting part happens Rachmaninov puts other parts in, like clashes of cymbals and rolling of drums.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m trying to explain what it felt like when I went to the MSO Rachmaninov concert on Saturday. It was energetic, powerful and it had all those things I talked about in it.
You have to think hard to understand it and you even find yourself tapping your feet along to it. MSO is a very powerful orchestra and they certainly work well with Rachmaninov.
Cousins Ahoy!
On the weekend I went to a party. Not a normal party, ooh no! A joint cousin’s birthday party! This is a review of the things we got up to.
Parents versus Kids
No, no one can have a proper party without a game of Parent’s versus Kids playing football. This game is the ultimate! All right, we did kick the ball over the fence a few times, but apart from that it was really cool. The kids won by 2 points. Oooh, it was so close. The parents could have won, but the kids beat them. Ha ha ha! Evil kids!
The stuffing the most cake into you as you can contest!
Do not try this at home! I really didn’t want to try it, but one of my cousins did and said he would not have dessert that night!
Hanging out with Honey
We love Honey and Honey loves us. She is the best dog for company in the world! She loves tummy rubs, pats and doggie biscuits!
Watching the footy!
At the very end, we gathered around and watched the footy live. It was a very close match and we were all jumping up and down in our seats. Fantastic!
The Design Fete
Last weekend Mum and I arrived at the Royal Exhibition Building with a big ‘WOW’! We were there to see the Design Made Trade event – especially AGDA who Dad was there with. When we got there we passed the white AGDA pod and lots of stalls that were very tempting but when we got to the real AGDA Design Fete we loved it!
We first tried out throwing a lasso over Nellie the big green horse … however missed! So did the second and third try. That is when one of the designers from Canyon whispered something to me … “Aim for the ear”. I did and sure enough it went around Nellie’s neck! I thanked the gentleman and got a free poster as a prize!
Next up we saw more designers Chase and Galley setting up science experiments. I took a quick peek and admired all the salt that had turned into huge crystals and the paperclip that floated on water and celery which had red leaves. Very clever!
Then I moved onto apple bobbing! The first time I bobbed I didn’t get an apple, but I did the second! Well, that’s not technically true. I nipped it by the stalk instead! Yummy green apples.
The last two things I did was looking at cards. Not normal cards. Very special cards that were screen printed using bright inks. They were done by a group called Motherbird. They were great!
Finally, one of my friends Andy Sargent was doing a Tattoo Workshop. You had to choose a picture from each category and Andy would paint them on you. It was really great and they even wore rubber gloves like real tattooists.
I can’t wait for next year’s Design Fete and I would like to say thank you to all the people who participated including Dad! Hip hip hooray!

Yong Green Food
Mum and I were out organising stuff in Fitzroy yesterday when suddenly, without warning, my tummy started grumbling. I knew it was time for lunch! We looked and looked for a great cafe, then Mum spotted a place called Yong Green Food. It looked good … however I didn’t know what I was up for …
We opened the door and walked inside. It was deliciously warm and the aroma was one of lovely strong spices. I sat down and looked at the menu. Too many choices! Soy kingfish, lentil hot pot, chickpea wraps, soy tuna? Nah, soy kingfish sounded fantastic!
While I waited for my meal to come a little tune came into my head. It went like this:
Yong Green Food is the best
it lets your body do the rest!
It’s the Yong Green Food Crew
that does the best they can do
Kingfish is cooked well
And the mango lassi will always sell
At Yong Green Food nothing goes to waste
Because all of it is superb in taste!

Yong Green Food, it’s the gate to heaven!
So, bang your drums and strum your guitar
’cause Yong Green Food is a **STAR**
In the end, I felt absolutely delighted. How good was that? Now, I’m actually so impressed with Yong Green Food I’ve giving them a 10/10 and 3 gold stars.
Trust me. I was mindblowingly good! Now take my recommendation and pack your bags for … Yong Green Food. It’s brilliant!
